Fourteen

THE FOLLOWING DAYS passed in a hazy blur, the afternoons bleeding into hot, restless evenings. Win spent afternoons on the back porch in her swing chair, working on her various assignments, gazing out over the woodland landscape. Her grandfather would often join her, emerging from under his truck, covered in splatters of oil and wait with her for Rowan to come home from work. When Friday rolled around Win was so relieved it was the end of her first week; she felt a sense of accomplishment. Her glowing sense of achievement was overshadowed by a clawing feeling, knowing Luke Fraser was angry with her. She hadn’t been able to easily miss his scowl, glaring daggers across the classrooms or ignoring her completely if they happened to bump into one another at school.

“You did nearly give his old grandpa a heart attack,” Ella reminded her when she mentioned it on the way home. “He isn’t exactly the forgiving type.”

Win wished she could explain what had propelled her to go nosing; only now she was left with the hideous memory of his wretched face, twisted with old age and hatred. He’d called her a witch. Win had lost count of the amount of times she’d caught Luke staring at her over the last two days, his arm protectively around Rosene’s shoulders, as they stalked past she avoided any eye contact with her.

Win spent her lunches and free periods with Ella, where they sat on the bleachers, watching the football team practice, or hanging out on the library steps. Their fledgling relationship had bloomed, and Win couldn’t deny the nice warm feeling of inclusion and familiarity when Ella pulled up in her drive every morning. All her hard work had been rewarded when Mr. Tyler returned her first English paper marked with a B+, a huge improvement from what she had been receiving in her old school. Win had to admit the Cedar Wood air was doing her good. It also helped Rowan had woken her at five the past two mornings for meditation practice, connecting with the Earth as she referred to it.

The mediation seemed to be helping with her headaches, Win had a clarity she’d not experienced for a long time, the veil of fog slowly lifting. Although she hadn’t fully phased into memory like she’d done the first time, Win had experienced a sort of traveling sensation. She could close her eyes and see into the woodland, as though she were out of her body and floating above the undergrowth. Rowan always pulled her back, grounding her back to reality before she went too far, but the exercise usually left her exhilarated and pain-free. Part of Win was curious to see if she could return to the memory, although the thought of being back in the pit scared her to death. But there was a nagging doubt that she’d not seen everything, still so many secrets left unspoken.

The sun was bleaching the panels of the back steps as Win settled to finish off the math paper her teacher had kindly bestowed upon her just before the end of class.
